Treatments for Hair Loss

Hair loss can be an incredibly distressing notion for both women and men. Luckily, treatments for hair loss are readily available and increasingly effective. Our dermatology practice can tailor a top-notch treatment plan to help reclaim your thick tresses.

Overview

Various types of hair loss (often called alopecia) can affect any area of the body, but the most common and distressing hair loss occurs in the scalp. The three primary types are: Alopecia areata (patches of hair loss), alopecia totalis (total loss of scalp hair) and alopecia universalis (loss of all body hair).

There are many different causes of hair loss and sometimes the cause is unknown. For example, alopecia areata is thought to have an immune system connection but scientists have yet to confirm that belief. Hair loss can also be caused by fungal infection (tinea capitis), male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia), traction on the hair from braids or clips, and stress or neurological conditions.

Signs and Symptoms

Signs and symptoms depend on the type of hair loss. It is normal to lose up to 100 strands of hair per day but more than this should be investigated by a specialist, particularly if you experienced an illness, stress or hair/scalp treatment around the time noticeable hair loss began.

Hair Loss Diagnosis and Treatment

At our Orlando dermatology practice, our experienced staff can investigate the cause and prescribe treatments for your hair loss. Orlando-area patients may undergo blood tests, scalp biopsies or other health scans for thyroid issues, infection, hormone fluctuations and autoimmune problems. Results of these tests can be helpful in determining the cause of hair loss.

Scalp treatment shampoos such as Rogaine and nutritional supplements such as Biotin can help stimulate hair growth or prevent further loss. Steroid creams and/or steroid injections may help to stimulate re-growth. In severe cases, your physician may prescribe immune system medications. Sometimes the condition resolves by itself over time.

Follow up and Outcomes

The long-term outcomes are unpredictable and dependent on disease-process and correction of the cause of hair loss. Our practice recommends regular visits for effective, personalized care.

The best resource for skin care. Always good advice and care. Sarah Fellenz is great in care and service. The OTC cream she recommended is working very well to reduce/remove skin eruptions. Thank you to your wonderful staff.
